![]() ![]() A Double Dragon cartoon? Double Dragon? Really?”ĭouble Dragon was an arcade game, one of the first really popular scrolling beat em ups. The story, what there was of it, was that you played as Billy or Jimmy Lee. Billy’s girlfriend is kidnapped by someone gang so he (and Jimmy, if you’re rocking the two player mode) has to kick ass and take names and get her back. So how does this: The pinnacle of arcade gaming. Turn into this: Yes, those are Dragon masks. ![]() I remember turning Sky1 on one day, waiting for Star Trek to start and there it was. Only now the brothers had swords and masks and Jimmy was a bad guy and the proper bad guy was a dude with a really big black mask and there were dragons in there somewhere.Īnd it was great. The stories were simple, as they inevitably always were. That didn’t matter, the swords looked cool and the world created by the show was quite interesting. The show also wasn’t afraid to shake things up a little. It started with one of the brothers being the bad guy but he quickly changed sides. This lead to new villains, new hero sidekick characters were introduced, the status quo would change again and again. You never knew quite what to expect from each episode which was one of the reasons I kept going back. The show lasted two seasons and got a video game, ironically a Street Fighter II clone. I really do think that if it came out in the 80s with a decent toy line people would be walking round today wearing t-shirts of the cartoon. ![]() I don’t know if you can get these on DVD, which is again a shame. If you do come across this show, give it a chance. It’s probably the best cartoon show based on a video game.People love to complain about how downloadable content has ruined modern gaming. This comes in a few different flavours. You have developers selling completely useless items, like the Horse Armor in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. There are games that are obviously missing chunks of their story, so that they can be sold to the player at a later date (like Final Fantasy XV). One of the worst examples of DLC is a game that heavily restricts its reward system in order to entice impatient players into paying real money to get them quicker (hello Overwatch). This kind of greedy behaviour has been going on for a long time. One of the first perpetrators of scamming money from the players happened in the arcade version of Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone. In the original arcade version of Double Dragon III, you could buy new moves, weapons and life bar extensions with real money. This isn't counting the money you needed to play the game in the first place. The "Item Shops" were so unpopular with players that they were removed from the Japanese version of the game. If it is possible for a franchise to be advertised towards children in order to make a profit, then someone will attempt it, no matter how violent the original concept is. There have been cartoons made of films like Rambo, Robocopand The Toxic Avenger, all of which were rated R. ![]()
